How To Clean Up Beard Trimmings

One of the biggest sources of frustration for the wives that have bearded men is the beard trimming mess at the bathroom sink and counters.

Don't lie, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

As it is with most of us men, our trimmings cleaning results are sub-par. Abysmal to be honest.

Maybe you will just let the beard hairs hit the sink as they fall, and try to wipe them off with wet toilet paper or hand-wipes after (I know, doesn't work that well).

Or maybe you just wash them all down the drain once you're done (this is a bit of work, but it does get rid of the hairs, until one beautiful day, your sink is clogged).

Whatever the case, the fact is still that trimming always leaves behind a bunch of beard mess.

In this post, we will present you five great methods to eliminate and minimize the trimming residue on your sink and counter-tops, and finally, make your wife happy (for a minute or two).

How to Minimize Beard Trimming Mess

1. Beard Bib

One of the more useful beard tools invented in the last decade includes the beard bib.

Its main purpose is to eliminate the problems most guys have with beard trimming mess, and the use of the trimming bib is wonderfully simple.

1. All you have to do is open up the foldable bib, secure it to the mirror in front of you with the provided suction cups, and strap the velcro band on the other end around your neck.
2. This creates a nice little basket in front of you, where all of your beard trimmings nicely fall into – completely avoiding the bathroom sink and countertops!
3. Once you're done you remove the suction cups (not by pulling but from their little hooks) and slide the hairs into the trash. Then just fold the bib back into its little pouch.

There are some obvious benefits to using a beard bib, such as…

• Reduced trimming mess on the sink.
• Your clothes stay free of facial hairs.
• No beard hairs in the drain – so no clogged pipes.

But there are also a few cons…

• Beard bibs cost you money.
• More time-consuming at first than just cleaning the mess.
• If you are not careful, it's quite easy to break the suction cups.

2. Vacuum Beard Trimmer

In our definitive buyer's guides to both beard trimmers and stubble trimmers, we highlighted a new type of product called the vacuum trimmer.

How it works to minimize the beard mess is simple.

There's a little chamber in the casing and a powerful little vacuum that sucks directly underneath the blades.

When you start clipping your beard hairs, the vacuum effectively sucks in about 90% of the trimmings and collects them into the chamber.

You can then, later on, remove the chamber and simply toss the contents into a trash bin.

But what happens to the 10% of hairs it doesn't vacuum?

Well, unfortunately, they end up on your bathroom sink. And have to be cleaned the classic way unless you're working with both the vacuum trimmer and a beard bib (double-whammy).

Regardless, if you want to get a vacuum beard trimmer, we suggest either getting the Philips Norelco BT7215 which works well for shorter beards and stubble. Or the Remington VPG6530 vacuum beard trimmer which works well for longer beards.

3. Barbers Trimming Cather Mat

The barber's trimming catcher mat is a decent solution to the endless beard mess you produce, but honestly not on par with the beard bib.

It's cheaper though, and sometimes quicker to use, so if you're working on a tight budget it may still be worth getting one.

How does it work exactly?

1. Simple, just like with the beard bib, you attach it with the suction cups to the mirror or wall in front of you.
2. Instead of strapping the other end around your neck, you just kind of let it lay there on top of the sink.
3. Then you sculpt and shape the beard to your preferred style and most of the hairs should fall into the mat.
4. As with the bib, you can then fold the trimmings catcher into a little shute and let the beard hairs fall into a bin.

You can find a trimming mat like this from Amazon for a few bucks. I'd still recommend the beard bib over it, but if you're really short on cash and lazy, the mat works too.

4. Line Up the Sink with some DIY Methods

Yes, the above is a picture of my own sink, and yes, that's exactly how I protected my bathroom sink from the messy beard trimmings before my wife bought me a beard bib.

Truth is, if you're very strict with money and like to do things your own way, then there are plenty of ways to cover up and protect your bathroom counters and sink without having to buy anything.

Here are some ideas…

• The above trick with newspapers is an easy one.
• You could also use an old piece of a blanket as cover.
• Maybe some old towels or even t-shirts can be used as well.
• And some guys just avoid using water and then vacuum the hairs.
• If you have a pedestal sink, you could line it up with a plastic bag.

At the end of the day, none of the above methods are that great, but they're free, so there's that.

5. Trim your Beard Outside

This may not be that good of an idea if you trim with the beard and mustache scissors or if its winter, or raining.

(I'm starting to second guess this method of eliminating beard hair trimmings already).

But hey, if it's a nice summer day, and you have a cordless beard trimmer that you can set up to your desired length, then why not just go outside and trim your beard there.

As nature intended (surely it didn't) all the beard hairs will fall to the ground and be carried away by the winds, and the bathroom sink inside will stay squeaky clean.

Conclusion

Trimming always leaves behind a hefty mess of beard hairs on the sink and counters.

It doesn't have to though.

If you get a beard bib, or a vacuum beard trimmer, or any of the other tips on this article, you can be sure that your sink top stays in pristine clean condition, no matter how much you cut your beard hairs.
